Attachment to Stainless Steel by Mir Space Station Bacteria Growing Under Modeled Reduced Gravity at Varying Nutrient Concentrations

چکیده
Four bacterial isolates (Chryseobacterium sp., Pseudomonas fluorescens and two Stenotrophomonas maltophilia isolates) originally isolated from the water system aboard the Mir Space Station were grown in two concentrations of nutrient broth under modeled reduced gravity using clinorotation. Sampling was performed over a 7 day period and planktonic cells were enumerated using 4′,6-diamidino-2-phenylindole (DAPI), while those attached to stainless steel were enumerated using the LIVE/DEAD R © BacLight kit and DAPI. On some of the sampling days for all the isolates, planktonic cell counts were higher under modeled reduced gravity as compared with the normal gravity controls. In contrast, the number of cells of P. fluorescens and one S. maltophilia isolate attached to the stainless steel disks was higher under modeled reduced gravity as compared with normal gravity, whereas no such differences were observed for Chryseobacterium sp. and the other S. maltophilia isolate. Differences in motility among isolates appeared to influence the growth of planktonic cells under modeled reduced gravity but did not appear to be related to biofilm formation. * Corresponding author: Dr L. Biocorrosion induced by Sulfate-Reducing Bacteria on Stainless Steel – A Preliminary Study
304 stainless steel was tested under the media without Sulfate-reducing bacteria (SRB) and with SRB. The corrosion behaviors of 304 stainless steel in SRB and without SRB medium were studied by measuring the open circuit potential, the polarization curves and electrochemical impedance Spectrum, weight loss measurements to get the changes of fore-and-aft corrosion fouling. The open circuit potent...

Listeria monocytogenes is an important foodborne pathogen that continues to be a serious problem for the food industry. This pathogen contaminates food primarily during post-harvest in the food-processing environment. Its ecology in the food-processing environment is not well understood but previous research has demonstrated the ability of L. monocytogenes to survive on food contact surfaces af...

Mycobacterium avium complex (MAC) and rapidly growing mycobacteria (RGM) such as M. abscessus, M. mucogenicum, M. chelonae, and M. fortuitum, implicated in health care-associated infections, are often isolated from potable water supplies as part of the microbial flora. To understand factors that influence growth in their environmental source, clinical RGM and slowly growing MAC isolates were gr...

One objective was to determine whether the persistent L. monocytogenes isolates demonstrated different attachment and b...
متن کاملEffect of flagella on initial attachment of Listeria monocytogenes to stainless steel.
At 22 degrees C a flagellin mutant of Listeria monocytogenes was found to attach to stainless steel at levels 10-fold lower than wild-type cells, even under conditions preventing active motility. At 37 degrees C, when flagella are not produced, attachment of both strains was identical. Therefore, flagella per se facilitate the early stage of attachment.
